Bret Michaels and I met almost ten years ago. He wanted to learn Kung Fu while on the road. So I met with his manager in Los Angeles, and a few days later, I was hired and flown to Portland, Maine to meet and teach Bret in between his sleep, traveling, and concerts (which were nearly every night, and in different cities).
I toured with Poison from Portland, Maine all the way down to Indianapolis, Indiana. Bret and Rikki Rockett shared a bus, and I rode with them.
I must say that Bret and the rest of the band members were incredibly friendly and really did a wonderful job in making me feel welcomed. Bret was humble and respectful and really wanted to learn. I was thoroughly impressed with his energy.
He and Poison would give an incredible concert each night. Then we'd travel as soon as they finished, and sleep a little bit once we checked into the next hotel.
Then a few hours before the next concert, Bret would want to train an hour or two. We'd work on self-defense techniques, form, and sparring. He had natural ability and a lot of passion. I remember telling him that if he didn't feel up to it, he could slow down and take it easy. But he didn't slow down. He always went for it 100%... and he did extremely well.
I must say that I was impressed with Bret, not only as a student, but as a person. I am happy to know that such a talented and successful performer is also a good-hearted and humble human being.
Thank you, Bret and Poison, for sharing a part of your lives with me.
And thank you, Bret, for giving me the honor of being your Kung Fu teacher for three weeks.
It was an incredible experience, and I'll never forget it.
